Sennheiser’s latest HD 550 is a hi-fi headphone that aims to deliver detailed sound with a balanced tuning. At the core of the HD 550 is a 38mm transducer, built in Sennheiser’s Tullamore, Ireland facility. It covers a frequency range from 6 Hz to 39.5 kHz while keeping distortion below 0.2%, per the brand. With a 150-ohm impedance, it works well with various hi-fi setups and can take full advantage of high-end amplifiers like Sennheiser’s HDV 820.
The HD 550’s fully open-back design incorporates a new acoustic mesh that protects the transducers and minimises any interference between the listener and their audio, Sennheiser says. The angled driver placement enhances stereo imaging, creating a spacious and immersive soundstage. For gamers, this means precise spatial awareness without lag.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the HD 550 features a modular build, making it easy to swap out cables and earpads when needed. The clamping force is more relaxed compared to other models in the 500 series, ensuring a comfortable fit. Weighing 237g—lighter than most gaming controllers—it is said to rest easily on the head. A soft-touch textured headband and ventilated metal mesh earcup covers add to the comfort without compromising durability.

It comes with a 1.8m cable with a standard 3.5mm jack, along with a 6.35mm adapter for broader compatibility with audio gear. For those needing more flexibility, additional cables—available separately—allow for connections to balanced sources or mic-enabled jacks.
Sennheiser has priced the HD 550 at $299 (approx. ₹25,729).
