CES 2025: AMD launches Ryzen Z2 series processors for handheld gaming PCs

Is Steam Deck 2 confirmed?

AMD Ryzen Z2 series processors just got announced at CES 2025 and the news comes hot on the heels of AMD’s desktop and laptop CPU announcements. However, the star of the show is this tiny little chip that brings more graphic cores and cache with faster performance and RDNA 3 compared to the Z1 chip that was in PC gaming handhelds like the Lenovo Legion Go, Asus ROG Ally and the Steam Deck.

There are three new chips in the AMD Ryzen Z2 series, starting from the top model the Z2 Extreme with 8cores and 16threads with up to 5GHz of max boost clock speed and 24MB cache and 16 graphics cores. The second in the series is the Z2 with the same cores, threads and cache as the Z2 Extreme but clocked at 5.1GHz max boost speed and with 12 graphic cores. The third variant is the Z2 Go with 4 cores and 8 threads and up to 4.3GHz max boost clock speed, 10MB cache and 12 graphic cores.

Both the AMD Ryzen Z2 and Z2 Go have a configurable TDP from 15 to 30W and only the Z2 Extreme chip goes up to 35W.

Expect both, Lenovo and Asus to announce new gaming handhelds at CES 2025 powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2 chips. We may not see a new Steam Deck soon but be sure to circle back on the Stuff website for more CES updates.
