Nearly a decade after its last update, Google has introduced the 4th generation Nest Learning Thermostat. This latest model features a completely redesigned look, new features, and compatibility with the smart home standard Matter. The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat also comes with the new Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) to keep tabs on the temps in other rooms. You can hook up to six of these sensors to balance out and control the average temperature across different rooms or spaces.
Google calls the new Nest Learning Thermostat a "piece of art." At 3.9 inches in diameter, it's 1.1-inch thick and sports a borderless 2.7-inch LCD screen that's 60% larger than before. The design takes cues from Google’s Pixel Watch, making it quite the looker. The display hides behind multiple layers of coloured and mirrored glass, giving it a bezel-free vibe. Thanks to the Dynamic Farsight feature, you can also easily customise the display to show the time, temperature, weather, and outdoor air quality at a glance. The accompanying Nest Temperature Sensor is a small, white, pebble-shaped device that can be placed on a shelf or hung using the keyhole on its back.
According to Google, the new model uses AI to quickly and accurately learn your heating and cooling patterns, along with other enhancements to optimise system management. The AI also generates personalised, energy-saving temperature schedules through the Smart Schedule feature. It adapts to your preferred temperatures and modifies its behaviour based on motion detection within your home.
It can also assess outdoor weather conditions and its effect on your home's interior temperature. For instance, Google explains that on a sunny winter day, the thermostat will halt heating to prevent overheating your space. Similarly, on a humid day, adjustments will be made since the indoor real-feel temperature may be higher than the recorded temperature.
The new Nest Learning Thermostat also includes a System Health Monitor to help you manage your HVAC system efficiently. It tracks HVAC performance over time, sending urgent alerts if issues arise, such as an AC unit failing to cool. Additionally, it monitors humidity levels to reduce the risk of mould or condensation on your windows.
Available in Polished Silver, Polished Obsidian, and Polished Gold, the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Temperature Sensor can be preordered on the Google Store for $280. Extra sensors are available for $40 each or $100 for a 3-pack. It will be released in the U.S. and Canada on August 20.
