Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV gets dismantled and repurposed as a giant air purifier

A prototype lives a second life

The Ioniq 5 name can pass off for an air purifier, and taking advantage of this, Hyundai has created a crossover no one expected. Using parts from the EV, the company has built a giant air purifier.

In the process of developing a new car, every brand goes through hundreds of prototypes and pre-production models. Hyundai essentially chose one such prototype and decided to give it a second life, albeit in a different avatar.

Hyundai’s engineers started out by stripping an Ioniq 5 model to its barebones, and then using as many of the components to craft a large air purifier. The entire thing is larger than you might expect, with the cylindrical housing itself larger than the car’s 20in alloy wheel.

The purifier’s body is made using the car’s doors and hood, while the cabin air filter and cooling fan form the heart of the purification system. The car’s pixelated LED tail lamps too have been used on the sides to add a bit of charisma to the machine.

Before you get all excited, this is not Hyundai entering a new product category, but simply a marketing exercise. That said, it does show how responsible recycling can give a second life to an aging car.
