Mini has joined hands with lifestyle brand Deus Ex Machina to create two bespoke one-off John Cooper Works models, unveiled at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. The project brings to life two contrasting cars united by a shared spirit, one all-electric, shaped by surf culture and minimalism, and the other powered by combustion, born from motorsport tradition.
The first, The Skeg, is a fully electric JCW producing 190 kW (258 hp), while the second, The Machina, is a combustion-powered JCW with 170 kW (231 hp). A striking white ‘X’ on each roof unites the two, highlighting the collaboration between Mini JCW and Deus Ex Machina.

The Skeg draws inspiration from surfboards and coastal life. Lightweight fiberglass body panels trim 15% off the weight, while semi-transparent surfaces and a bold yellow-and-silver finish give it a presence. A Flex Tip Surf Spoiler, shaped like a surfboard’s underside, caps the design. Inside, neoprene bucket seats, fiberglass storage trays for wetsuits, and pared-back analogue controls reflect surf culture’s minimalist, purposeful ethos.
By contrast, The Machina is a track-focused racer in red, white, and black, celebrating Mini’s rallying heritage. Widened fenders, a Can-Am–style rear spoiler, and bonnet-mounted auxiliary lights set the tone outside, while the interior features exposed roll-cage tubing, raw aluminium floor panels, five-point harnesses, and a hydraulic handbrake. Functional touches like a rear diffuser and perforated grilles are engineered for precision and performance, underscoring its motorsport DNA.

Deus Creative Director Carby Tuckwell led the visual direction of the project, while British artist Matt Willey crafted the striking exterior graphics, drawing inspiration from historic racing liveries. Willey previously worked with Deus on a custom-painted Mini Cooper S in 2023, paying homage to Mini’s legendary 1964 Monte Carlo Rally win.
