Sonos introduces its first AI-powered sound mode to enhance speech

Its most advanced Speech Enhancement tools to date

Sonos has dropped a big update – its most advanced Speech Enhancement tools to date, to make voices in your shows and movies sound clearer. The update adds four new Speech Enhancement levels—Low, Medium, High, and Max—so you can tweak the dialogue clarity the way you like. It’s also the first time Sonos is using AI to handle sound processing, making this their smartest audio upgrade yet.

Teaming up with the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID), Sonos has created a smart system that uses AI to analyse audio on the fly. It focuses on boosting speech clarity while keeping the deep bass, Dolby Atmos, and overall sound quality intact. The best part is that it only kicks in when necessary, making sure you get clear dialogue without messing with the immersive experience of every scene.

If you've used speech enhancement tools before, you probably noticed how the bass and dynamic range often take a hit to make speech stand out more. But Sonos says its new mode is different – it keeps the powerful bass, full soundscape, and immersive Dolby Atmos elements intact. This is thanks to two key factors – the speech is enhanced separately from the rest of the audio, and the system is dynamic, only activating when it detects that speech might get lost in background noise.

The system only kicks in when it detects dialogue being overshadowed by noise, so it won't activate during quiet moments or when there’s no dialogue at all. It adjusts dynamically, applying more processing during busy scenes and less when the audio is calmer, as per Sonos.

The new Speech Enhancement feature is rolling out via a software update for Sonos' Arc Ultra soundbar.
