God of War Ragnarok PC performance review

It’s done port-perly

The award-winning sequel to Sony’s most famous first-party title has landed on PC, and it demands a whopping 190GB of storage space on your PC — SSD nonetheless. If you want to read our review for God of War Ragnarok from 2022, Click here.

God of War Ragnarok has been relatively stable like most Sony PlayStation first-party titles. A few patches here and there give it the final nip and tuck to run on even Steam Deck and handheld PCs like Lenove Legion Go.

If you have a beefy PC like our test bench with an Nvidia 40 series GPU and Intel 11th Gen and above, then playing this on even 4K settings shouldn’t be an issue. If you’re still rocking a PC with an Nvidia 10-series GPU, then you’re probably going to struggle a bit to enjoy the foliage and beauty of Vanaheim.

That said, to run on 1080p @ 30 fps average with low settings, you’ll need a minimum Nvidia GTX 1060, but we wouldn’t recommend playing God of War Ragnarok on the lowest possible settings. The game’s appeal is its stunning game art and level design. Combat is also core, for which you’ll probably need an AMD or Nvidia GPU that can output frame generation along with current upscaling methods. The game works well with frame generation on our Nvidia 4080 Super.

The game runs at 155FPS with Nvidia Frame Generation on 1440p resolution and Ultra settings. Without Nvidia Frame Generation the game’s frame rate is reduced to 80FPS average which is not surprising because as per our testing, optimised game titles generally see a 1.5x to 2x increase in frame rate with Frame Generation.

Even on a handheld PC like Lenovo Legion Go, we got a steady 40 FPS on 1280 x 800p and medium settings with AMD FSR set to Quality and with Frame Generation on. Frame Generation is crucial here as well, and having the device connected to power and on Performance mode to get the best output. If you’re wondering about the hassle then yes, this is a very demanding title for handheld PCs but I am still surprised that it’s playable and stable too.

Here’s what I said about the game when it launched two years ago on the PlayStation 5.

“It’s no easy task to make a game that intertwines gameplay, cinematics, and creative camera work to tell an epic adventure but God of War Ragnarök manages to set an example for everyone yet again. Single-player games have tremendous potential and create value. Whether you’re a God of War loyalist or simply started after the 2018 reboot, Ragnarök continues the story of Kratos and Atreus in the most meaningful way. It stays true to its characters and the fan base. Even though we truly miss the raging murderous rage of Kratos, this here is worthy of my time, especially when I have aged and dulled my senses in the 15 years since the first God of War game.
