LG HU810P 4K Laser Smart Projector review

Supersized WebOS

₹ 3,80,000

If you're a fan of LG’s WebOS but have had to limit your enthusiasm to 77 inches, there’s good news. The CineBeam HU810p is a laser projector disguised as an all-in-one home-theatre box. It has speakers, the smart apps that you need and of course, the 4K laser display. Capable of delivering 97% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, it does support HDR, albeit the vanilla variety.

Design

The design is a standout with its clean lines and almost home-appliance like appearance rather than a piece of AV kit. Sitting at the top of the CineBeam range, the HU810 gets all the usual flexibility of flagships such as H/V lens shift,1.6x optical zoom and the latest WebOS 5.0 along with the Magic mouse remote. Using an Iris control that’s optimised for either dark or bright rooms, a great starting point is the Cinema Home mode which gives you a good blend of contrast and rich colours. What is instantly noteworthy is the crispness and brightness of the picture, which at 2700 lumens gets plenty bright even if you have a dimly lit room over a dead dark one.

Performance

You could dig into the advanced picture controls and get more granular control over independent RGB channels and even use calibrating software, but that won’t be the approach adopted by the majority of the CineBeam’s TG. Instead, using the HDMI 2.1 port, you can switch your source to output 4:2:2 and experience outstanding colour fidelity on animated content. The skin tones on live action need a bit of work and the HDR doesn’t really click to make the image truly capture your imagination with depth or realism.

Conclusion

The LG does excel at motion processing and reproducing the primary colours that makes sports truly enjoyable. Contrast is an area where most projectors struggle and the CineBeam does suffer from crushed blacks too. It’s not meant for gamers either, though it does support ALLM. Similarly, the built-in speaker is functional and not something you’d use to watch The Penguin on. As a casual AIO device, this works. Not the videophile's choice.

Fine design and execution of an everyday entertainment device. Could be better with HDR and black levels though.
