Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K review

Handy proof of your automotive (mis)adventures

from ₹ 9,990

The roads in India can be wildly unpredictable; from vehicles coming the wrong way to two-wheelers taking a random u-turn because they suddenly decided to, so much can go wrong. When it does, there’s also the blame games and potential hassles to deal with, including complaints, insurance claims, and the like. That’s where a good dashboard camera comes in - providing useful evidence of what went wrong. Qubo’s range of smart and connected dashcams are in focus here, and today I’m reviewing the new and improved Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K.

Priced at Rs. 9990 for the package with the front camera and Rs. 12,990 for the front and rear camera set, the Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K is a fully connected and smart dashcam to consider mounting in your car. With a recording resolution of 2592x1944 pixels and Wi-Fi connectivity for app-based functionality, is this the most practical and functional dashcam you can buy right now? Find out in this review.

Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K review: Specifications and features

Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K

You dash cam doesn’t need to look good as long as it gets the job done, but despite that the Qubo Dashcam 3K Pro is a good looking device. It has a wide shape with the camera mounted at one end, itself with an adjustable field of view to optimise for proper visibility. Buttons at the bottom help to control the dash cam, and a 3.2-inch screen at the back can be used to view footage and navigate through settings.

If you mount this right - right behind your rear-view mirror and with concealed wiring - you won’t even end up looking at the camera on a day-to-day basis. The camera comes with a simple attaching kit which sticks onto the inside of your windshield, with the camera itself clipping into place on the kit. This makes it possible to remove and reattach the camera quite easily.

Power supply to the Qubo Dashcam 3K Pro is through USB Type-C, and the 12V adapter for the car is included in the box. There’s a long cable giving you enough length for a concealed installation, so setup and getting going can be quite easy. The device powers up on its own as soon as you turn on your car (assuming the adapter is connected), and proceeds to record continuously and for as long as the storage will allow before overwriting the oldest footage.

You’ll have to put in your own microSD card for that, and the Qubo Dashcam 3K Pro supports up to 1TB storage cards. Understandably, the more storage you use, the more footage will stay saved on the card before overwriting. I used a 64GB card which could record about 4-5 hours of continuous footage at the highest supported resolution (2592x1944 pixels), after which it overwrote the oldest footage and kept going.

It may not sound like a lot, but it’s more than enough leeway to stop and capture any footage that you might actually need, in the unfortunate event of a mishap. Of course, you can use a larger microSD card to increase that recording space before overwriting, which might come in handy if you want to use the footage as memories of your drive apart from just securing evidence in case of mishaps.

Apart from continuous and loop recording, you can also set up the emergency recording lock or record on demand, creating specific video clips as needed directly from the camera. The Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K has a 5MP Sony Starvis 2 sensor with a 140-degree field-of-view - well regarded for its recording capabilities in the dashboard camera segment. The device comes in two kit options - just the front camera, or a front and rear camera combination which can be mounted at the back of the car to record footage at the rear as well.

Key connectivity features on the Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K include Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity, app support for quick connectivity, monitoring and footage recovery, and a built-in super-capacitor which is said to ensure that the dashboard camera can work in both hot and cold temperatures. The emergency recording feature automatically records and secures footage in a protected folder, if jolts or crashes are detected using the g-sensor on the camera. Usefully, there is a microphone which can record audio inside the vehicle.

Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K review: Performance

The Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K is very easy to operate and get going with, as it very well should be. The point here is for the device to work quietly in the background until it’s needed, and it does exactly that. Once set up with the storage card in place and the settings such as resolution and video looping fixed, the camera powers up when the car powers up, and records continuously till the car is turned off.

Indeed, it reliably turned on when the 12V socket got power (I had it plugged in all the time to ensure it turned on without any action) and started recording. GPS connectivity ensures that details such as real-time speed and location (along with the date and time) are hard-embedded onto the footage.

The Sony Starvis 2 sensor is said to be made specifically for the unique requirements of dashboard cameras, and the Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K benefits from this. The footage was sharp and detailed, with excellent contrast levels that ensured even night-time footage looked clean and details were visible. From reading text on signboards to capturing number plates in varying light conditions, the Qubo Dashcam 3K Pro did a decent job.

Wi-Fi connectivity and app support are particularly useful here, since this lets you use your smartphone to connect to the camera to control settings, as well as quickly recover footage and have it available to send using your phone. This can be particularly useful if an incident takes place, since you may not necessarily have the ability or equipment needed to fetch the footage from the storage card at that point.

The smartphone connects with the dash cam using a dedicated Wi-Fi connection, after which you can directly download any footage or even manually create video clips or screenshots that save to your smartphone from the QuboPro app. When not connected to the camera, you can use the app to access saved video clips or screenshots.

Verdict

Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K

If you’re looking for an after-market dashboard camera for your car, options today are plentiful. However, a couple of key features help the Qubo Dashcam Pro 3K stand out, namely its adjustable-angle camera module, GPS connectivity, ease of use and convenience thanks to the QuboPro app, and ease of installation. Mounting and dismounting the camera is easy, and support for up to 1TB storage cards is very useful too.

When it comes to performance, the camera delivers excellent footage in varying light conditions - there’s plenty of detail and a wide field-of-view, both of which are key factors in dashboard cameras. Another useful touch is letting you decide if you want just the front camera or the kit with both the front and rear cameras.
