Google Maps has rolled out a major update by introducing Gemini AI to make navigation smarter and more intuitive. The new integration enables a voice-driven, distraction-free experience for drivers, allowing them to interact with the app without picking up the phone.

With Gemini’s advanced voice capabilities, users can issue layered commands to handle multiple tasks on the go. This includes locating destinations, checking for available EV charging points, sharing live trip progress, or adding plans to their calendar. The system can also process detailed requests like finding affordable vegan dining options on the way or getting real-time parking insights.

Maps introduces landmark-led directions

Google Maps is making navigation more intuitive by offering guidance based on recognisable landmarks instead of just street names. Directions may now include cues like “make a right turn past Thai Siam Restaurant,” using insights gathered from Street View and its database of more than 250 million listed places for greater accuracy.

Additionally, the app can now send real-time road advisories even when navigation mode isn’t active, flagging issues such as congestion, roadblocks, or sudden closures. These timely updates help users plan better, avoid delays, and adjust their route well in advance.

Lens with Gemini boosts real-world discovery, safety features

After arriving at a location, users can activate Lens powered by Gemini to instantly learn more about their surroundings. By pointing their camera, they can explore nearby spots, uncover popular attractions, or ask for insights such as crowd vibes, ambience, or must-try recommendations, making local discovery more interactive and informed.

The voice-first navigation experience is already live on both Android and iOS in regions where Gemini support is available, with Android Auto compatibility set to roll out shortly. Meanwhile, landmark-based routing is being introduced across the US for users on both mobile platforms.

Google is also beginning the US rollout of real-time route disruption alerts for Android, which operate even when navigation mode is off. Lens with Gemini will start reaching users across Android and iOS in the US later this month.

By shifting key tasks to voice interactions and on-the-go visual insights, the updates are designed to minimise distractions and help drivers stay focused while seamlessly accessing important travel details.
