Wi-Fi 7 in India explained: How it’s about to transform the way you use the internet

From buffering to blazing fast!

If you’ve been waiting for faster and more reliable Wi-Fi in India, there’s good news. The government has delicensed the 6 GHz spectrum for indoor Wi-Fi use. With this change, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers can now tap into this high-speed band, which until now was off-limits in the country.

This actually means Indian users will finally be able to experience the full benefits of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7. Since this band is less congested than the existing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, it translates into faster internet speeds, smoother streaming, and lower latency for things like cloud gaming, video calls, and 8K streaming. It also helps reduce interference, as your devices won’t be fighting with neighbours’ Wi-Fi signals on the same old channels.

However, the approval is limited to low-power indoor usage, so these gains will mostly apply at home, in offices, malls, and airports, while outdoor public hotspots won’t benefit just yet. For everyday users, it means Wi-Fi will become faster and more reliable, but you’ll need a compatible router and device to take advantage of it.

Here’s how to future-proof

With smartphones, laptops, and smart home devices steadily rolling out Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 support, this policy change means buying a new router won’t feel like a stopgap anymore. It ensures that devices purchased in the coming years can perform at their best without being bottlenecked by spectrum restrictions. While mainstream adoption will take time, some brands have already started making their Wi-Fi 7 routers available in India through online platforms and imports.

Wifi 7 routers you can choose from

TP-Link is currently the most active player, offering models like the Archer BE400 (BE6500), a dual-band router capable of speeds up to 6.5 Gbps, and the higher-end Archer BE800 (BE19000), a tri-band that supports up to 19 Gbps along with dual 10G ports, EasyMesh compatibility, and strong future-proofing.

Netgear has also stepped into the Indian market with its flagship Nighthawk RS700S (BE19000), which delivers tri-band Wi-Fi 7 performance and multi-gig wired options, although availability is currently limited to imports at a higher cost.

For those considering whole-home coverage, the Netgear Orbi 770 Wi-Fi 7 mesh system has also been introduced globally and is earning praise for pushing multi-gig speeds across large spaces, though its official presence in India is still uncertain. You should be able to see more WiFi 7 routers start launching soon, probably around Diwali and the holiday season.
