Apple has rolled out Digital ID, a new capability in Apple Wallet that lets users generate and use a digital version of their identification based on details from their U.S. passport. Currently launched in beta, the feature will initially function at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 U.S. airports, making it available for domestic air travel.

According to Apple, Digital ID is intended to offer a secure and convenient alternative for carrying identification on an iPhone or Apple Watch, particularly for individuals who don’t have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID. However, Apple emphasised that this feature does not replace a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or at border control points.

Setting up a Digital ID involves opening the Wallet app, tapping the Add (+) button, and choosing Driver’s License or ID Cards before selecting Digital ID. The user is then guided through a verification process that includes scanning the passport’s photo page, reading the chip for authenticity, and completing a facial recognition check with selfie and movement prompts. After successful verification, the Digital ID is added to Wallet.

Using the ID is designed to be equally simple. Users can double-click the side or Home button, choose Digital ID, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near an ID reader. They are shown what information is being requested and must confirm sharing through Face ID or Touch ID authentication.

Apple highlighted that Digital ID leverages the hardware security of the iPhone and Apple Watch to protect personal information. All ID data is encrypted and stored locally on the device, ensuring that Apple cannot track when, where, or how the ID is used. Every sharing request must be explicitly approved by the user using biometric verification.

In the coming months, Apple plans to expand Digital ID functionality to enable verification at participating retailers, venues, and online services for identity and age confirmation.

At present, driver’s licenses and state IDs can be added to Apple Wallet in 12 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, with Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia recently joining the program. Apple has also started international expansion of the feature in Japan, integrating support for the country’s My Number Card on iPhone.
