Gmail’s Smart Reply is getting a major intelligence upgrade, powered by Google’s Gemini AI. Unlike the current version, which only offers basic, canned responses based on the ongoing thread, the new Smart Reply will be able to draw from a much wider pool of context. That includes your past emails, files stored in Google Drive, and your communication habits.

This new capability, which Google calls Personal Context, means replies will feel far more tailored. Whether you're replying to a close friend or sending a note to your manager, Gemini helps craft responses that match your tone and style—casual when it should be, formal when it needs to be. Essentially, Gmail will now write like you, not just for you.

Google says Gemini is designed to handle tough tasks like sifting through email threads and documents to pull out the info you need for your replies. The goal is to deliver smarter, more personalised responses that help you get things done.

This enhanced Smart Reply feature will launch in English as an alpha test in Google Labs starting this July. It’ll be accessible on Gmail across web, Android, and iOS platforms. At first, it’s exclusive to paid users—including Google Workspace subscribers and Google One AI Premium members—with no official word yet on if or when it will roll out to free accounts.
