Spotify is rolling out lossless audio streaming for Premium users at no additional cost. Premium subscribers will get a notification in the app when Lossless becomes available, after which they’ll need to activate it manually on each device. With Lossless mode turned on, Spotify will stream music in 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC format, using approximately 1GB of data per hour.
According to Spotify’s blog, for the best lossless audio experience, it’s recommended to stream over Wi-Fi and use wired headphones or speakers via a direct connection like Spotify Connect. Bluetooth doesn’t currently support the bandwidth required for true lossless playback, so audio is compressed before reaching the device.
Lossless streaming is available on mobile, desktop, and tablet apps, as well as on many Spotify Connect-compatible devices from brands such as Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser. Support for additional devices, including Sonos and Amazon products, will be added eventually.
Spotify has also cautioned users that lossless audio files are larger than standard tracks. As a result, when playing lossless music, there may be a short delay while the file is cached and loaded before playback begins.
1. Tap your profile icon in the top left of the app.
2. Go to Settings & Privacy, then select Media Quality.
3. Choose where to enable lossless audio: Wi-Fi, cellular, or downloads.
The feature is being rolled out gradually across 50 markets, including the US, UK, Australia, and more. However, there’s no confirmed timeline yet for when lossless streaming will be available in India.
