Expect the upcoming smartphones to get smarter with Qualcomm’s latest flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.
Compared to the previous iteration Gen 1, the new SoC delivers better CPU and GPU performance and 4.35x increased AI Computation. It’s the first chip by the company to support INT4 - an AI format. And it has an integrated Snapdragon X70 Modem that hosts an array of AI features that as per Qualcomm, can enhance 5G speeds, coverage and power efficiency.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 comes with support for Wi-Fi 7 and dual Bluetooth connectivity along with dual-active dual-SIM support. The brand also ensured a 40% increased battery life over Gen 1.
With the new chipset, mobile gaming will also become more immersive as it debuts real time hardware-accelerated ray tracing which should deliver authentic lighting, real-time reflections and global illuminations (with ray tracing hardware now available in smartphones via Gen 2 chip, we may see mobile game developers embrace the new tech like they did on PC and console).
The chipset also supports natural language processing, multi-language translation and AI Camera functionality, plus is tuned to support new image sensors from Sony and Samsung.
As per Qualcomm, the first commercial devices with the new chipset are expected to enter the market by the end of 2022 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be adopted by global OEMs and brands including Asus, Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmi, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi and Zte.
