And so the great iPhone wheel turns again. This year, it’s the turn of the standard iPhone 17 to get a serious dollop of the good stuff, borrowing a few tricks from its Pro siblings and adding a rather clever one of its own. The big story? It’s finally time to say cheese to a brand-new selfie camera.
Apple is calling it the ‘Center Stage’ front camera, and its party piece is a new square sensor. This nifty bit of engineering means you can now snap a landscape selfie while holding the phone vertically. No more awkward hand gymnastics to get everyone in the frame; just hold it as you normally would, and the phone does the clever bit. It’ll even use AI to automatically widen the shot for group pics. You can also record from the front and back cameras at once, which is perfect for your next riveting unboxing video.
It’s not just the front camera getting all the love. For the first time, the standard iPhone is going all-in on 48-megapixel sensors for its rear cameras. You get a main 48MP shooter that also provides a crisp 2x telephoto zoom, and a new 48MP Ultra Wide that promises much more detailed wide-angle and macro shots.
The screen has also been on a growth spurt, now measuring 6.3 inches and, crucially, getting the ProMotion treatment. That means buttery-smooth 120Hz scrolling that makes everything feel just that bit zippier, while also being smart enough to save battery when you’re just staring at a widget. The screen is also tougher, with a new ‘Ceramic Shield 2’ that Apple claims is 3x more scratch-resistant, and it's bright enough to outshine the sun on a clear day.
Under the bonnet, the new A19 chip provides the grunt, promising faster performance and helping to deliver an impressive all-day battery life. Plus, storage now starts at a more sensible 256GB. It’s a hefty upgrade that makes the standard iPhone feel a lot more ‘Pro’ than ever before.
Apple iPhone 17 will be available in lavender, mist blue, sage, white, and black in 256GB and 512GB storage capacities. Prices start from Rs. 82,900.
