One’s company, two’s a crowd, and three’s a party—Huawei seems to have taken this to heart with its latest and the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT. It’s got a massive 10.2-inch foldable OLED display with 3K resolution that gives you three devices in one. Fold it up, and you've got a 6.4-inch smartphone in your hand. Half-open it and it becomes a 7.9-inch foldable. Fully unfolded, and you’re looking at a full 10-inch tablet. Weighing in at 298g, the Mate XT is only 3.6mm thick when fully opened.
Unlike most foldable smartphones that rely on two screens—a primary foldable display and a cover display—Huawei’s tri-fold Mate XT goes for a more innovative approach with just one screen that folds at two levels. To pull this off, Huawei has packed in some serious tech, including an ultra-tough laminated structure and the use of non-Newtonian fluid. The phone’s two hinges play a key role, with an inner fold designed to resist compression and an outer fold to withstand tension, ensuring smooth, one-directional movement while keeping the hinge sturdy and reliable.
It runs on HarmonyOS 4.2 and offers 16 GB of RAM, with storage options ranging from 256 GB to 1 TB. Huawei has kept quiet about the chip powering this tri-fold marvel. On the camera front, the Mate XT is equipped with a 50 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 12 MP telephoto lens that supports 5.5x optical zoom. For selfies, there’s an 8 MP front camera neatly tucked into a punch-hole cutout.
The Mate XT is powered by a 5600mAh silicon carbon battery, claimed to be the world’s thinnest ever used in a smartphone. It supports 66W fast wired charging and 50W wireless charging. With a starting price of 1,99,999 Yuan (around ₹2,35,000), it’s undeniably a premium device, but with nothing quite like it on the market, it sets itself apart. Available for pre-order now, the Mate XT will officially go on sale in China on September 20.
