Tesla opens first India showroom in Mumbai, Model Y first to go on sale

The car debuts in two variants – Standard and Long Range, starting at Rs 59.89 Lakh

Tesla has officially made its debut in India with the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Spanning 4,000 square feet, the new space—dubbed a Tesla Experience Centre—marks the electric carmaker’s much-anticipated entry into the Indian market. Additional showrooms are expected to roll out across major cities, including New Delhi, shortly.

The new Mumbai showroom is currently spotlighting the refreshed Model Y, the brand’s all-electric SUV. Six units have been brought in from Tesla’s Shanghai facility for the launch, with the displayed model finished in a stealthy dark grey, featuring black alloys and a sleek, coupe-like silhouette.

Inside, the cabin embraces Tesla’s signature minimalism with a dual-tone black and white interior, centred around a 15.4-inch touchscreen. Tech highlights include wireless charging, USB-C ports, voice commands, internet connectivity, and app-based vehicle control.

In India, Tesla is introducing the Model Y in two variants – Standard and Long Range. The Standard Model Y offers a WLTP range of up to 500km and is claimed to do 0–100kph in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range version stretches that to a 622km WLTP-certified range, with a slightly quicker 0–100kph time of 5.6 seconds. Both variants are rear-wheel drive with a claimed top speed of 201kph. Tesla backs the Model Y with a 4-year/80,000km warranty on the vehicle and an 8-year/1,92,000km warranty on the battery and drive unit.

Pricing starts at Rs 59.89 lakh for the rear-wheel-drive variant. While there’s no official word yet on local manufacturing or assembly plans, Tesla’s Mumbai showroom launch is widely seen as a strategic first step to test market appetite and lay the groundwork for future expansion.
