Xiaomi may have been beaten in the sprint to launch its new foldable smartphone to the likes of Samsung and Moto, but they have just made some big moves to beat Tesla by unveiling a working humanoid robot prototype. You may recall the CyberDog showcased last year, but this is a whole new step forward. Revealed at the live event yesterday, the CyberOne is 5.8 feet tall, weighing just 52 kgs. With near life-size proportions, the “Metal Bro” has even been given a zodiac sign!
Flaunting its abilities, the robot walked to the middle of the stage last night to hand the CEO a flower, before taking a selfie with his Creator. The bot then proceeded to exeunt stage left without any mishaps. The CyberOne is the second product coming out of the Xiaomi Robotics Lab.
When it comes down to the features of this humanoid machine, it has a curved OLED panel, as a face which can see the world in 3D and hear with two microphones to identify "85 types of environmental sounds and even 45 classifications of human emotion." The body itself has a total of 21 degrees of freedom made up of 13 joints, with each part capable of responding within 0.5ms. The company claims the upper limb actuators have an output torque of up to 30Nm, capable of operating with precision of up to 1Nm for a gentle touch. While the lower limbs are powered by actuators with an instantaneous peak torque of up to 300Nm.
After the live demo, the Xiaomi CEO stated that you can expect the humanoid to cost between 600,000 and 700,000 yuan (about ₹70-80 lakh). We will still have to wait before the company deems it suitable for mass production, if ever. So you can start putting your loose change to good use and save up for your own personal robot. Until then, Xiaomi will continue upskilling and educating its first humanoid robot, so that it can live up to the standards set by Boston Dynamics' Atlas robot.
