Does a pair of headphones really need its own display, though?

Wireless headphones are made for sound, but you still need to control them from somewhere. For most of us, that happens on a smartphone, but what if I told you there’s an easier way to do it? That’s where the Promate VuTune headphones come in, with a dedicated and detachable LCD display doubling up as a remote control for headset controls and info. Priced at Rs. 5,199 in India, the Promate VuTune headset has this unique feature, but how does it sound?

Promate VuTune ANC headphones: What does the LCD screen do?

The 2-inch LCD screen on the Promate VuTune headphones is actually quite useful. It showcases key data such as the battery level on the headphones and the remote unit itself, and you can also cycle through screens for the controls. Set the time and date, adjust the volume, toggle between the ANC and hear-through modes, set the equaliser preset, and even set up alarms on the headset.

Usefully, you can also adjust the brightness, background wallpaper, and display language for the screen, as well as use it as a soft torch light by activating the white background torch. A couple of screens - the ‘like’ icon and the ‘camera’ toggle didn’t seem to work for me when the headset was paired with my smartphone.

The LCD remote magnetically attaches onto its cradle on the right side of the headset, and can be taken out for wireless remote operation as needed. It’s a rather cool touch, letting you pop it off to toggle things like playback, volume, and ANC controls, after which you can conveniently pop it back into place for safekeeping. The remote itself has a USB Type-C port for charging it quickly.

Promate VuTune ANC headphones: What about the rest of the headset?

The Promate VuTune is a proper over-ear headset, and features active noise cancellation and hear-through modes. The headset itself has a wide swivel range and foldable design, and comes with a nice hard carry case for storage when not in use. Comfortable padding on the headband and around the ears makes for a comfortable fit.

In terms of specifications, you get SBC codec support, and up to 50 hours of battery life with ANC off (or 30 hours with it running). Sound quality isn’t exceptional, but it can get loud and delivers a workable listening experience on the go.

Consider the Promate VuTune headphones if you want something eye-catching and conversation-starting. The LCD screen and remote functionality will definitely turn a few heads, and adds some utility for those who don’t want to have to pull out their phone for controls every time. That said, if you’re looking for something with good sound and more effective ANC performance, you might want to look at alternatives.
