Asus ProArt PA279CRV review

4K creator monitor with full Adobe RGB support

₹ 69,999

Asus ProArt series monitors are aimed at photographers, designers, video editors and other creative professionals who need the best in colour accuracy and hardware calibration capability. The PA279CRV joins the PA279CV, which has been the lone 27-inch 4K monitor in the ProArt series in Indian market, and the good news is that this will bring the price of the PA279CV down for those who only need to work on sRGB colour space.

Design

ProArt 279CRV vertical

The ProArt 279CRV has the same sleek, minimalist and practical design that has become the signature of the series. The flat rectangular base allows you to keep small objects on it without wasting space on the desk, while the thin profile lets you use a screen light and keep it closer to the wall. The display can be wall-mounted with a 100 x 100 VESA mount. The cylindrical stand offers an oval cable management slot.

The display supports tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustments, making the ports easily accessible in addition to the usual functions. You get all parts of the stand separated for packaging convenience. This requires an additional step in integrating the stand with the flat mount at the rear. The whole set-up is sturdy with all load-bearing joints reinforced with metal. The ports line up at the bottom and there are physical buttons for on-screen display control at the bottom right corner.

Features

PA279CRV Rear

The display is an LED-backlit non-glare IPS panel providing 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution resulting in a pixel density of 163 ppi. The glare-free finish helps with uniformity and affords up to 178-degree viewing angles on either side. The panel can reproduce up to 99 percent Adobe RGB  and DCI-P3 colour gamut in addition to 100 percent sRGB. The monitor offers 400 nits peak brightness and 3000:1 contrast ratio along with HDR10 support and VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification. With 5ms response time, 60 Hz refresh rate and adaptive-sync support, it is also ready for video editing and occasional gaming.

PA279CRV ports

Apart from the ProArt preset modes for various colour spaces, it includes two user modes for you to create and store custom calibration profiles. The monitor supports Gamma 1.8 to 2.6 with a colour accuracy of △E< 2  and comes Calman verified for colour accuracy. Advanced gamma and RGB gain controls, make it easier to get accurate results during calibration.

The monitor houses ample ports including two DisplayPort 1.4 with daisy chain support, two HDMI 2.0, one USB Type-C supporting DP Alt mode and 96W power delivery. You also get a 3.5mm earphone jack and a USB hub with three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A and one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port. The Type-C port in the USB hub supplies 15W of power.

Performance

The Asus ProArt PA279CRV is one of the best 27-inch professional creator monitors unless you have managed to locate one that can reproduce colour spaces beyond Adobe RGB, such as ProPhoto RGB. Considering gamut coverage, our tests returned 96.3 percent, 95.7 percent, and 83.4 percent for sRGB, AdobeRGB, and DCI-P3 respectively and 142.5 percent, 98.2 percent, and 100.9 percent by volume. A mild deviation on the Blue-Red axis led to the slight shortfall, while the crucial Blue-Green curve traced the AdobeRGB comparison curve perfectly.

Our review unit produced uniform illumination throughout. The monitor can be daisy-chained with compatible ProArt monitors via DisplayPort to expand and organise your workspace more efficiently, that is if you can supply input also via DisplayPort. There’s sound output via two 2W speakers, but you would be better off with an external speaker system.

Conclusion

PA279CRV side

The ProArt PA279CRV is a veritable upgrade to the PA279CV, the lone 27-inch 4K capable monitor in the Indian ProArt line-up with 99 percent Adobe RGB support and a few other key additions. This device adds Adobe RGB and upgrades DisplayPort to 1.4 standard with daisy chain support. With this monitor, Asus now has two 4K UHD monitors at different price points for creators.
