Optoma OMA-S review

Portable, and also capable

₹ 1,75,000

Portable projectors come in various shapes, sizes, and prices, ranging from very affordable (and often unreliable) picks to high-end options which promise a good combination of portability with capabilities. If you're looking for top-notch performance on the go, or you even just want the flexibility to project anywhere in your home with ease, a good portable projector will go a long way.

Priced at Rs. 1,75,000 (but likely available at a lower street price), the Optoma OMA-S is the brand's most powerful and capable portable laser projector yet. The device itself weighs in at under 1kg, and even with the carry case and add-ons such as the power adapter, cables, and remote, the entire set will fit conveniently in a backpack. This makes it suitable for use when out and about, including to use for presentations in office spaces, or even for some entertainment in hotel rooms while you're traveling.

Optoma OMA-S review: Design and specifications

Many portable projectors have built-in batteries to offer some wire-free functionality on the go, but the Optoma OMA-S skips this in order to stick to a compact and lightweight form factor. You'll have to connect the included power adapter to run the OMA-S typically, but Optoma does have a solution for your occasional wire-free requirements.

The USB Type-C power input port lets you also plug in a power bank (65W output or more) to reliably power the projector away from a power socket. How long it runs in this scenario obviously depends on the capacity of the power bank, but we were able to get it to run for a little over two hours with a 20,000mAh power bank delivering 85W of output.

Optoma OMA-S review: Connectivity and performance

Optoma OMA-S

Connectivity is the key to any projector, and the Optoma OMA-S stands out in this department for the versatility of ways to connect to a video source. Direct wired connectivity options include USB Type-C and HDMI, and if you're connecting a streaming dongle such as the Google Chromecast, there's also a power-supplying USB Type-A port to conveniently provide power to the dongle itself, saving you a valueable power socket somewhere. Unfortunately, native Wi-Fi connectivity relies on an optional dongle to work.

All of this is conveniently controlled with the included remote, and the Optoma OMA-S rather usefully has IR receivers at both the front and back to be able to read commands from the remote. You can turn it on or off, change the source, and navigate on the basic interface of the OMA-S.

Picture quality is impressive on the Optoma OMA-S, delivering a sharp full-HD picture of varying sizes depending on how far from the wall you position the projector. Sound on the built-in speakers is average, but you can connect to wired or Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

Verdict

On the whole, the Optoma OMA-S is a capable and powerful portable laser projector. Although a bit expensive, it's worth a look because of its convenience of connectivity, ease of setup, and the ability to simply slip it into your bag and take wherever you go.
Use it for entertainment or productivity just about anywhere, including at home to project onto your ceiling, if you like - the portability makes it so versatile. Importantly, it gets the picture quality right.
