How much storage is too much? We are not quite sure. Add the need for speed, and Samsung’s T7 series of portable SSDs (PSSD) are certainly in need of an upgrade. And the good news is that the replacement is already here. The new PSSD T9 offers double the transfer speed with the latest protocols in place, ready for all your high-definition videos. And this upgrade couldn’t have come at a better time, with the latest iPhones ready to sync over USB Type-C.

The T9 is almost the same size as that of the T7, but sports a new bumper skin design that is harder with a nice textured finish enhancing the grip. Our experience with the T7 series says the new bumper would be less prone to disintegrate into a sticky mess in humid and dusty Indian conditions. What more? The drive is enclosed in an aluminium casing that, according to Samsung, can withstand drops from three metres.

The SSD offers a Type-C interface with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 standards in place, along with a status LED. The kit includes a Type-C to Type-A as well as a Type-C to Type-C cable. The drive is ready to plug and play with a wide range of devices including smartphones and tablets. Windows and Mac drivers come pre-fed. The Samsung Magician software provides access to all advanced features including setting a password for secured access. Other features include performance benchmarks, firmware updates and real-time health status checks.

The T9 portable SSD offers up to 2000 MB per second data transfer speeds with a compatible host device. With high-speed transfer rates, you can continue recording your videos directly on the drive without a break, thanks to a larger buffer. We connected the drive with a Google Pixel 7 Pro and the phone detected the SSD without any trouble, transferring 4K video clips remarkably fast. No wonder Samsung aims the SSD at video creators and professional cinematographers. To keep the thermals in control during high-speed data transfers, the SSD uses Samsung’s proprietary Thermal Guard technology with an efficient heat sink design.

The Samsung T9 PSSD is available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, making it a compact and lightweight solution to all your data storage needs, especially if you are into filmmaking. The SSD comes with a 5-year warranty. Prices are yet to be announced.

Verdict

The T9 is a necessary upgrade to Samsung’s portable SSD line-up, and the drive offers blazing-fast data transfer and great thermal management features. Rugged design and cross-platform compatibility are other positives.
