Good news if you’re on the free plan—ChatGPT’s memory feature, once reserved for Pro users, is now open to all. That means it can remember your preferences and quirks to serve up more tailored responses. Whether you’re writing, learning, or just poking around for advice, it’s now that bit sharper.
OpenAI, on X, said, "We’re starting to roll out a lightweight version of memory improvements to Free users. In addition to existing saved memories, ChatGPT now references your recent conversations to provide more personalised responses." To test this feature, “Describe me based on our chats.” As per OpenAI, GPT won't remember what you said six months ago, but recent conversations are fair game.
To switch memory off, you can head to settings, personalisation, then memory. You can turn it off entirely, tap Manage Memory to review what’s been saved or wipe it clean. The memory feature isn’t brand new, but OpenAI’s given it a solid upgrade, and now even free users get a taste.
