Alongside the Xiaomi 15 series, Xiaomi pulled back the curtain on a new concept called the ‘Modular Optical System’—essentially a detachable external lens that snaps onto the bank of a smartphone. To demonstrate the idea, Xiaomi showcased a custom-built Xiaomi 15 fitted with this modular camera setup.
A small receiver, powered by Xiaomi’s proprietary LaserLink technology, connects it to the camera interface—so it functions just like a built-in lens, with full access to Leica processing and all camera modes. Unlike other external lenses, this one doesn’t need its battery, drawing power directly from the phone. Plus, it’s completely plug-and-play, with no pairing or extra setup required.

The Modular Optical System features a large sensor and a zoom lens. It's got a micro four-thirds sensor paired with an f/1.4 lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length. With this setup, Xiaomi is looking to level up mobile photography, giving you sharper shots and more creative options.
